New ski touring standard: can I still use my METEOR, METEORA or SIROCCO helmet?

Since the end of 2025, a newly-published European standard has been in effect that covers the design of ski touring helmets (EN 18100: Helmets for ski mountaineers). Now that this standard has been published, can I still use my Petzl helmet for ski touring?

My helmet has “SKI TOURING” printed on the label

If I have a METEOR, METEORA, or SIROCCO helmet with “Helmet for climbing, mountaineering, and ski touring” printed on the label, I can use my helmet for ski touring until the end of its lifespan (when it is retired or has reached its maximum lifespan).

Before the publication of the EN 18100 standard: Helmets for ski mountaineers, there was no European standard covering the design of helmets usable for ski touring.

For ski touring, the METEOR, METEORA, and SIROCCO helmets were CE-certified for ski touring in accordance with a testing protocol (PCSR-002) specially developed in cooperation with an independent certification body.

Helmets that were manufactured and certified in accordance with this specific protocol for ski touring do not lose their certification with the publication of the new EN 18100 European standard (it is not retroactive).

My helmet does not have “SKI TOURING” written on the label

Example of a label without the words “ski touring”

If I have a METEOR, METEORA, or SIROCCO helmet labeled solely as a “climbing and mountaineering helmet,” Petzl cannot claim that it is suitable for ski touring.

The METEOR, METEORA, and SIROCCO helmets do not meet the requirements of the new European standard EN 18100: Helmets for ski mountaineers.

With the publication of this new standard, the PCSR-002 testing protocol alone is no longer sufficient for us to claim that these helmets are suitable for ski touring. So we can no longer manufacture helmets intended for this use if they do not meet the new European standard EN 18100.

For this reason, we have eliminated the use of these helmets for ski touring and removed the associated PCSR-002 certification from the product marking, the Instructions for Use and packaging.
