What does Megos bring to the climbing gym?

Alex Megos has been one of the world’s very best climbers for years. Attaining this level usually requires more than climbing solely on rock. Training in the gym can be important to build power and level up. Whether he’s climbing the set, projecting problems on the MoonBoard or Kilter Board, fingerboarding, or working on mobility — the hours spent training in the gym are numerous. Alex tells us what he brings with him when he heads to the gym for a training sesh.

Rock climbing

1. Backpack: Patagonia Cragsmith 35L

2. Harness: Petzl SITTA. Light and easy to pack. Even when I go bouldering I bring a harness to use for some exercises with additional weight (pull ups, fingerboarding).

3. Belay device: Petzl GRIGRI. I always leave my GRIGRI clipped to my harness. You never know…

4. Climbing shoes: Tenaya Iati and Tenaya Indalo. I always bring two different kinds of climbing shoes for every case. One pair is better for volumes and slabs and the other is better for the Kilter Board.

5. Chalk bag: I like to keep my chalk bag in the SAKOVER, otherwise it always makes a mess in my backpack.

6. SAKAB bouldering chalk bag: my main chalkbag for any gym session from bouldering, to fingerboarding, to strength exercises.

7. Faza brushes: brushing is one of the most important parts of climbing inside and outside. I always bring at least two Faza brushes for all occasions.

8. Skincare kit: Arguably the most important piece in my backpack! This little kit includes everything I need for skin maintenance. Tape (lots of it), razor blades, more tape, sandpaper, nail clippers, another pair or nail clippers, skin cream, superglue, a knife, a little swiss army knife, a lighter and more tape. I also use it as my trash for leftover tape and used tape.

9. Carrots: You can’t go wrong with a couple of carrots to keep you going during a hard training session.

10. Fingerboard: I usually leave my portable little Beastmaker fingerboard in my backpack, just in case. It’s light and has a perfect edge for warming up and one-handed training.

11. Chalk: Friction Labs Bam Bam chalk. For me there is nothing worse than being at the gym without chalk or tape. I can easily have a great session without climbing shoes, but without chalk or tape it usually ends up being pretty bad.
