Stuck screwgate carabiner

A stuck carabiner is a situation that you may encounter, or have already experienced.

In a wet environment, for example in the rain or in a canyon, water gets into the carabiner’s locking sleeve and displaces the original lubricant. In this case, you may find it difficult to lock / unlock the sleeve.



In case of difficulty unlocking the sleeve, here are some tips to help open it:

  • Wrap rope or webbing around the sleeve to increase the leverage on it.

As a preventative, or if the sleeve sticks or rubs when opening / closing, lubricate the sleeve with a few drops of silicone oil. Screw / unscrew the sleeve once or twice, then remove the excess oil with a cloth.

Finally, remember that it's important to do a regular PPE inspection of your carabiner.
