If you cut the rope due to wear such as sheath slippage at the ends for example, make sure the rest of the rope is intact and cut the rope at least 10 centimeters from the damaged area.

Here are our recommendations for cutting your rope:

  • Use a hot knife to obtain a neat, clean cut.
  • When cutting a rope, you must mark each end with the proper end-markings for each new rope.
  • At a minimum, you must mark the diameter, the new length, and the rope's identifier on each new rope-end.
  • Only use rope end identification kits designed for this use.

For example, the Petzl Rope End Identification Kit, R002AA00:

Identification Labels specifically for AXIS and PARALLEL (R004AA00, R004BA00) ropes are also available.
