An Uncommon Path
In 2023, two names emerged on the global competition climbing scene: Raviandi and Ravianto Ramadhan. Twin brothers from Indonesia, they are working their way up without structure or support from their federation, driven by a singular ambition: to pursue their dreams to the very end.
Dissidence retraces their journey, from the training walls of Jakarta to French crags and international competitions. In a daily life where nothing comes easy, their determination manifests on Dissidence (8c/5.14b), an iconic route in La Balme de Yenne, Savoie, France. Hanging on the edge of shadow and light, the climb becomes a fitting metaphor for their story — pushing upward against all obstacles.
A Film Born From Necessity
Directed by Rama Dio Syahputra, Dissidence is his first film, one he worked on mostly alone for two years. It quickly became clear to Rama that Raviandi and Ravianto had a story that needed to be told. His work sheds light on a reality that often remains unseen: climbers existing on the margins of established systems. Between Indonesia and France, the film offers an understated, intimate look into their lives, from moments of intense effort to moments of stillness.
Its style is marked by restraint and subtlety without sacrificing a strong visual identity (notably in the interview sequences and the split-screen during the final ascent). The direction and editing are remarkably accomplished for a first film.
