How do I add an NFC/RFID chip to my product?

RFID/NFC chips are widely available on the market.
For convenience, we recommend using NFC chips rather than RFID: most smartphones can read NFC chips, while they cannot read RFID chips.

You can add an RFID/NFC chip to your Petzl products if you follow these precautions:
  • The chip must not cover the original product markings (e.g. serial number, certification, or warning on the product).
  • Do not damage the product or interfere with its function.
  • Follow the chip's instructions and confirm that the adhesive is compatible with any products used to prepare the surface for chip installation.

NFC chips have the advantage of being easy to read. Our PPE management application, ePPEcentre, is compatible with NFC chips. The chip's unique identifier (UID) can be entered into the Custom ID field.

Example of NFC chips on carabiners:

For optimal compatibility, Petzl recommends the use of non-programmed (or uninitialized) tags. Pre-programmed (or initialized) tags can contain URLs that can open unexpectedly. Non-programmed tags function because ePPEcentre uses an individual identifier that is present in each NFC tag (UID = Unique Identifier).

Non-programmed tags are widely available for purchase online.
