Rappelling: installing a REVERSO on a CONNECT ADJUST adjustable single lanyard

When setting up a rappel, all maneuvers at the rappel station must be done while tethered to the anchor. In this tech tip, we will show you a method for installing a descender directly on the arm of an adjustable single lanyard, while staying tethered with your body weight on the rappel anchor.

Rappelling on two rope strands requires the use of a descender and a friction hitch. Extending the descender above the friction hitch, while keeping it within reach, helps limit any bad interactions between the two.

With this type of setup, the extended descender can be attached directly to the lanyard with a clove hitch.

The video below shows the different steps in setting up the rappel system, while staying tethered with your body weight on the rappel anchor.

Information
  • The position of the descender on the lanyard must not interfere with the friction hitch when it is under load. Verify that your rappel system is working properly before untethering yourself from the anchor.
  • The descender is temporarily attached to the lanyard during the rappel sequence. Do not leave a descender permanently attached to a lanyard.
