Hotel Supramonte

Roger Schaeli (SUI) was able to climb "Hotel Supramonte" (8b, 400m, 11 pitches) in the Golla di Gorroppu Gorge on the island of Sardinia, Italy. The route is considered to be one of the most famous and most sought-after climbs of the island. It was established in 1998 by Rolando Larcher and Roberto Vigiani. In 2000 Pietro dal Pra was able to climb it free. "Hotel Supramonte" is one of the hardest alpine sport climbing routes in the world.

Checking in to Hotel Supramonte

Swiss alpinist Roger Schaeli tried his luck before in the world famous "Hotel Supramonte" a few years ago already. He attempted the route to spice up his beach vacation on the island of Sardinia. But the line didn't let him go. Three years later he returned with Alexandra Taistra (POL) to try and climb the line. However, Schaeli injured his hand and his chin after a fall in "Hotel Supramonte" had to take a break. When he returned to try again the temperatures on Sardinia were too warm to give the line a serious try.

After Schaeli sent his hardest route to date with "Mind Control" (8c/+) in Oliana in the spring of 2017 the Swiss alpinist headed to Sardinia highly motivated again. Him and Jonas Schild (SUI) tried "Hotel Supramonte" again. After a few days and several serious attempts Schild and Schaeli were able to redpoint the line!

Schaeli says: "I knew I only had a chance of redpointing the line of conditions were perfect. When I got there they were everything but with the beaming sun and no wind. I felt it would be a battle. I was kind of hoping Jonas would just say we call it quits because conditions that day were too bad. But Jonas just let me fight. When I finally redpointed "Hotel Supramonte" in the last rays of light of the day I was incredibly happy and very relieved to finally be able to close this chapter!"
