Occasional rope ascent with the I'D

Basic Techniques

The I’D can be used to ascend, for precise positioning or a short rope ascent.

Warning

  • Carefully read the Instructions for Use referenced in this Tech Tip before reading the Tech Tip itself. You must have read and understood the Instructions for Use to understand this supplementary information.
  • Performing these techniques requires specific training. Work with a professional to confirm your ability to perform these techniques safely and independently before attempting them unsupervised.
  • We provide examples of techniques related to your activity. Other techniques not described here may also exist.

When the handle is in "descent" mode, the rope slides freely in the up direction. The user need only move upward and take up slack as they go, to always stay in tension on the rope.

WARNING: when the handle is in "descent" mode, the user must continuously hold the brake side of the rope.

Simple technique:

Install a ascender and foot loop on the rope above the I’D. Stand in the foot loop to unweight the I’D while simultaneously pulling the brake side of the rope. Smoothly transfer your weight to the I’D, move the foot loop up and repeat the maneuver.

With directional point on the ascender:

Install a ascender and foot loop on the rope above the I’D. Pass the I’D’s brake side of the rope through a directional point on the ascender (carabiner or pulley). Pull on this rope to haul yourself while simultaneously standing in the foot loop. Climbing effort is reduced but progress per cycle is less than with the simple technique.
