I have a lanyard with elastic webbing branches, what should I do?

Global UIAA and Alpine Clubs information for Via Ferrata lanyard with elastic webbing branches:

13 September 2012, BERN, Switzerland: The UIAA - International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation is issuing a worldwide warning to users of via ferrata sets. The warning follows a fatal accident on 5 August 2012 on a via ferrata in the vicinity of Walchsee in Tirol, Austria. It was found that the webbing strength of the elastic webbing branches was dramatically affected after intensive use not only because of its specific construction but also due to the material used.

The level of the risk is dependent upon the specific model. Therefore, users are strongly advised to visit the website of the manufacturer to check if their via ferrata set is safe to use.

If you have a Petzl Via Ferrata lanyard with elastic webbing branches

The Petzl via ferrata sets with elastic webbing branches remain safe in use as long as you respect the guidelines for usage, maintenance and inspection described in the instructions for use, and particularly the maximum lifetime (10 years max).

Warning: An unrelated recall for inspection is still active for all Petzl Scorpio lanyards manufactured up to serial number 11137****.

Complementary information: After having conducted tests on extensively used Petzl via ferrata sets with elastic webbing branches, Petzl has observed no decrease of the resistance of the elastic webbing branches thanks to the high tensile strength, tubular construction of the elastic webbing that guarantees a high resistance of the Petzl Via Ferrata set with elastic webbing branches.

If you have another brand's Via Ferrata lanyard with elastic webbing branches

If you have another brand's Via Ferrata lanyard with elastic webbing branches and need more information, visit the UIAA website.
