Preventing waterfall ice accidents

The mountain guides Jérôme Blanc-Gras and Manu Ibarra have created an online database to collect the observations made by climbers on the condition of waterfall ice worldwide.

Page d'accueil du site Icefall Data

The objective of icefall-data.org is to gather as much information as possible about waterfall ice events, such as cracking, fracturing or collapsing, which occur during the waterfall ice-climbing season, to better understand the transformations the ice undergoes.
This data is then correlated with the waterfall ice temperature and morphology. It allows ice climbers to identify favorable climbing conditions, as well as dangerous periods when collapses have already occurred.
Icefall-data.org also aims to encourage research on waterfall ice using the data collected on the website to improve knowledge of this constantly changing matter.
Feel free to submit your observations on www.icefall-data.org
