Conservation of difficult access ecosystems

Activities involving vertical access often take place in fragile sites of great natural beauty. The Petzl Foundation supports non-profit organizations whose role is to discover and protect biodiversity on cliffs, in caves and mountain ranges.

Préserver les écosystèmes d’accès difficile

On Camptocamp.org, the route to the Combe Madame refuge, in Belledonne (France), is located near two sensitive wintering areas for black grouse. There are also information notice boards in the area.

Building respect for biodiversity

Lovers of the great outdoors often lack information about areas which are home to wildlife that may be sensitive to any kind of disturbance. The purpose of the Biodiv’sports project is to communicate the presence of sensitive wildlife using websites which are frequently visited by hikers and climbers when they are preparing for their next outings. These include Camptocamp, IGN Rando and Geotrek. The sensitive areas are mapped in cooperation with sports federations, conservationists and local land managers.

Each map provides a description of the wildlife in the area, as well as information about behaviors to avoid creating a disturbance. Sharing this information faciltates dialog and raises awareness among mountain lovers. By showing thier respect for the biodiversity of their chosen recreation site, they are making a valuable contribution to wildlife protection. The Petzl Foundation will continue to fund this initiative in 2019.
