What to remember:


- The standards require testing with a 100 kg mass for most devices. The requirements of the standards only partly cover the consequences of a fall of a 100 to 140 kg user (including equipment)

- The increased stress on the belay system is proportional to the weight of the user: a 140 kg user generates 40 % more stress on his equipment than a 100 kg user. The equipment must be able to absorb the extra energy released during a fall

- The human body cannot withstand a fall without energy absorption. The system must therefore include a "dynamic" component that is capable of absorbing the fall by limiting the impact force

- The maximum impact force sustainable by the user depends on his weight: 6 kN for 100 kg, 7 kN for 120 kg, 8 kN for 140 kg

- Petzl did fall tests with 140 kg dummies on all devices and offers three solutions based on the results:
