Why aren't the HUIT and SIMPLE descenders PPE like the STOP and I’D?

Non-self-braking descenders are not considered PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) according to European Directive 89/686/CEE. Therefore, they do not bear CE markings.

The STOP and I’D are self-braking descenders, are therefore considered PPE by the European Directive, and must carry mandatory CE marking.

Petzl recommends that users of non-CE descenders like the HUIT or SIMPLE treat them as PPE and inspect them periodically.
