Performance of the ASAP with a 250 kg load, with the ASAP fixed to an anchor.

Test results for an exceptional situation: fall of a 250 kg mass, arrested by a belay system using the ASAP fixed to an anchor. This corresponds to a two-person rescue situation in which any fall must be carefully avoided.

Warnings

  • Carefully read the Instructions for Use used in this technical advice before consulting the advice itself. You must have already read and understood the information in the Instructions for Use to be able to understand this supplementary information.
  • Mastering these techniques requires specific training. Work with a professional to confirm your ability to perform these techniques safely and independently before attempting them unsupervised.
  • We provide examples of techniques related to your activity. There may be others that we do not describe here.

Tested situations

Setup with a redirect.

Note: with the ASAP and an attentive operator, is is easy to avoid having any slack in the system, which is recommended.

Setup without a redirect.

Conclusion and usage precautions

The short fall distance makes it possible to avoid exceeding the energy-absorption capacity of the ASAP'SORBER AXESS and ABSORBICA L57 energy absorbers.

Therefore, the ASAP may be used in this case.

The rope must be continuously and carefully managed to avoid any slack.

For a 250 kg load or two persons, use the ASAP only with an ASAP'SORBER AXESS or ABSORBICA L57 energy absorber.

Pay attention to the ASAP's direction of installation in this situation: carry out a test of the locking direction before each use.

The rope must pass through a redirect at the anchor.

Warning: for every setup, allow enough clearance for the ASAP to move during deployment of the energy absorber.

Results

Note: the tests were carried out using the ABSORBICA L57 energy absorber. The energy absorption capacity of the ASAP'SORBER AXESS is greater than that of the ABSORBICA L57: the results are thus also valid for the ASAP'SORBER AXESS (only the tearing lengths may differ; the impact forces at the anchor are less than 6 kN).

Tests with OXAN at the redirect

ASAP fixed to the anchor with an ABSORBICA L57, on VECTOR 11 mm rope, 38 cm fall.

- Average impact force measured at the load: 7.1 kN

- Average impact force measured at the anchor: 5.3 kN

- Average tearing of the ABSORBICA: 45 cm

- Rope intact, ASAP still operational

Comparative test with RESCUE at the redirect

Using a pulley at the redirect minimizes friction.

ASAP fixed to the anchor with an ABSORBICA L57, on VECTOR 11 mm rope.

- Impact force measured at the load: 6.18 kN

- Impact force measured at the anchor: 5.5 kN

- Tearing of the ABSORBICA: 46 cm

- Rope intact, ASAP still operational

Test without a redirect

ASAP fixed to the anchor with an ABSORBICA L57, on AXIS 11 mm rope, 20 cm fall, 250 kg mass positioned 2 m from the anchor.

- Impact force measured at the anchor: 5.9 kN

- Tearing of the ABSORBICA: 70 cm

- Rope intact, ASAP still operational
