Tyrolean on rope with RIG
The RIG may be used as a progress capture device to tension a rope.

It allows tensioning of the rope without damaging it in case of overloading, and releases easily. The system is designed for light loads: one or two people depending on the application and the situation.
Warning: the installation presented here is only part of a system. A complete system must include (depending on the terrain) at least one additional rescue or backup rope.
Tensioning the tyrolean:
RIG 2018: the AUTO-LOCK system allows hauling without operating the handle.
RIG < 2018: handle in position b (belay).
Simple haul system: two people pulling.
Using the tyrolean:
RIG 2018: The AUTO-LOCK system locks the load automatically and returns the handle to the stop position.
RIG < 2018: handle in position c (work positioning).
Mule knot in the free end of the rope at least 1 m from the RIG.
An occasional overload can cause the rope in the RIG to slip. This slippage helps reduce the impact force and must not be hindered by the knot.
The knot limits rope slippage through the RIG in case of a prolonged overload.
Releasing the system:
To lower the user during a traverse, add a braking carabiner to the RIG's anchor point. Operate the handle while holding the brake-side rope to control the rate of descent.
Dismantling the system:
If the tension is too high, using the handle can be difficult; re-installation of the haul system may be required.
Loads on the anchors:
Manual hauling on a 10.5 mm rope can produce a tension of 3.5 kN before the system is loaded.
Rope slippage in the RIG reduces the risk of overloading the anchors.
A rope tyrolean will sag once it is loaded. Make sure there is enough clearance under the rope to allow the load to move without striking the ground or an obstacle.
WARNING: never tension a rope with a winch or a car: an over-tensioned tyrolean can damage the RIG and generate significant forces on the anchors and on the rope. If you need high tension, use a cable with an appropriate tensioning system.
