The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® 2011: 4 seasons in a single race

Gathering a total of 8000 runners for a cocktail of 4 different ultra trail races, The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc confirmed it's rank as the world's toughest event of its kind. The weather remained the master in the mountains: for this 9th edition, runners were greeted by the full array of meteorological conditions: intense heat, thunderstorms, drenching showers, high winds, thick fog, sub-zero temperatures, snowy passes and a finish under a clear blue sky.

Sasha DiGiulian takes 1st overall at the 2011 IFSC World Championships

A storied locale set in a green valley and surrounded by rocky outcroppings, Arco, Italy, this year hosted thousands of climbers and fans from around the world for the International Federation of Sport Climbing’s crowning competition, the Climbing World Championships. The 18-year-old climber from Virginia Sasha DiGiulian took first place overall.

New selection camp for Pangaea Expeditions

June 12 marked the beginning of a new selection camp in Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland. Sixteen young people from around the world gathered for a 10-day camp where they competed for places on an expedition to Nunavut, Canada scheduled for August 2011.

Beth Rodden – Spain and the Evolution of Sport Climbing

It’s funny how you can return to things in life after a long hiatus and have them feel normal in your new routine. When I started climbing 17 years ago, sport climbing was all the rage. (Bouldering hadn’t been validated yet, and trad climbing was passé.) Relatively early in its development, sport climbing’s boundaries and limits were constantly getting pushed, new areas found and developed, and training ideas and techniques perfected. Along with all that came ethical debates and “wars,” just as with anything new, exciting, and revolutionary.
