Well, if today’s World Cup Qualifiers were any indication, the Semi-Finals and Finals tomorrow promise to be quite a show. For the second year in a row, Vail is hosting the premier bouldering event in the country. Excellent problems and good sending temps made for an exciting event.
For the women, as many expected, Alex Johnson (US) dominated, flashing all five problems with Anna Stohr (AUT), Kim Jain (KOR) and Alex Puccio (US) close behind. They, along with Lisa Rands and 15 others will compete tomorrow in the semi-finals.
In the Men’s, Daniel Woods (US) made a strong showing. He was among 5 that tied for first place, all flashing the five problems. Last year’s champion Killian Fischhuber (AUT) was also in that bunch. Petzl’s Loic Gaidioz (FR) placed 13th.
Besides the strong climbers and solid results, the other aspect that stood out at the qualifiers this year was the quality of the problems and excellent organization. The problems were fun to watch (according to spectators) and fun to climb (according to competitors). Big, dynamic moves that flowed well were the dominant theme: the double-clutch dyno on the men’s 3rd problem was a real crowd-pleaser.
