Once again, the mountain Gear Red Rock Rendezvous was a success, drawing nearly 1,000 participants for three days of clinics, good food, yoga, beer, slack lining, music and more in one of the most magnificent desert settings in the country.

Petzl sponsored the popular event, an annual gathering in Nevada’s Red Rock Canyon now in its seventh year. Petzl climbing team members including Chris Sharma, Beth Rodden, Joe Kinder, Emily Harrington, Ethan Pringle, Lisa Rands, and more showed up to teach clinics or sign posters, and just hang out and have a good time. Meanwhile, Petzl set up a booth and a bunch of employees from the Salt Lake City offices showed up. Marketing Director John Evans taught a photo clinic and Dustin Butcher captured the event on video. A dozen other Petzl athletes, employees, and reps were in attendance. In short, Petzl was well represented.

Though in the past, the RRR was mostly a climbing event, in recent years it has grown to include a wider variety of activities. This year, in addition to climbing clinics from beginner to advanced, there were mountain biking clinics, plus attendees could learn first aid or take up slack lining. Saturday night saw free dinner (courtesy of The North Face) and free beer (New Belgium), plus an auction that raised $14,000 (two climbing days with Sharma were auctioned off, netting $4,200 ).

The three main points of the RRR, says Event Coordinator Phil Bridgers, are education (clinics, etc.), safety, and “plain old fun.” The 2010 event hit the mark on all counts, and plans are already in the works for 2011 (“The big news for next year is that the camping is back at Spring Mountain Ranch,” says Bridgers – this year it was at Bonnie Springs, a bit farther down the road).

The bottom line: For a sweet time with great people in a beautiful place, come out to the Red Rock Rendezvous. Start watching www.redrockrendezvous.com for registration in September. Need more motivation? Check out the video above…
