Alistair Lee, one of the best film makers, comes up good again.

Camera men maybe good guys, but the bosses at the TV companies are not! you cannot trust them! This year I was lined up for 8 weeks of work with the BBC for a big project. It was ‘guaranteed’ and I was told to drop all other work, but of course, at the last moment it all fell through leaving me skint, but at least with plenty of time to climb!

However, last year the telly thing worked out and the BBC made a good little film of me trying a route at Malham cove, a link between Bat Route, Rainshadow and Overshadow, but with quite a lot of new climbing. There was to be only one day of filming and I’d been holding off, hoping to get the moment of success on camera. First go I gave it everything, the camera spurring me on to glory. I got to within three moves, half a metre. Close but absolutely no cigar. The BBC were happy, it was all a bit more than they’d expected anyway. Second go was even closer, better conditions now but tired from the first effort. The last move! Close enough to be satisfied I’d do it another day, though when that day would come was anyone’s guess.

It came soon, and the same camera man was there, Alistair Lee, maker of many a fantastic film such as Psyche and Asgard Project. He filmed it again, not for TV this time, but just for himself, cos he likes doing that sort of thing! Hanging in a harness uncomfortably for hours and the impossible job of editing my boring looking climbing into something watchable. A true master. If you haven’t seen his stuff check out his site, in the climbing film world he’s at the top of the game.
