Following a via ferrata accident on Thursday May 5, 2011, as a precautionary measure we launched a Recall Alert for Inspection for all Petzl SCORPIO via ferrata lanyards. Our internal investigation and analysis identified a potential weakness in our manufacturing procedures specific to the production of tear-webbing energy absorbers that could explain the defect leading to this accident. Because the SCORPIO and ABSORBICA share a similar tear-webbing shock absorption technology, we are requesting inspection of both the SCORPIO and ABSORBICA.

As a consequence, and even though the probability of this defect recurring remains very low, we have decided to take the following actions:

  1. Temporarily stop all Petzl tear-webbing energy absorber production.
  2. Temporarily stop the sale of all stock of SCORPIO and ABSORBICA units pending inspection.
  3. Issue a request for immediate self-inspection for all ABSORBICA energy absorbers, used by professional workers at height.

You'll find in the Sport section a dedicated page regarding SCORPIO actions.

If you possess an ABSORBICA energy absorber as detailed above we ask you to:

The lanyards with energy absorber for the ASAP mobile fall arrester ASAP'SORBER are not concerned by this alert.
You may continue to use these products, whilst respecting the conditions of use, maintenance and inspection outlined in their respective technical notices.
