New ice climbing tools

The line of Petzl Charlet QUARK and NOMIC ice axes has a new look and has been expanded with the addition of the ERGO, an exclusive model designed specially for high-performance dry tooling and ice climbing.

François DamilanoThis new line has a modular design that allows the user to set-up his ice axe according to his needs or to the specific demands of the trip. For example, for a snow couloir, the GRIPREST and the TRIGREST hand rest can be removed from the QUARK to decrease its weight; for a mixed couloir, the NOMIC can be equipped with a hammer in order to place pitons.

Because of the versatility of this new approach, the most demanding user may now create a personal combination for his ice axes, from the most complete to the lightest, for the most extreme activities.
With the adjustable GRIPREST and TRIGREST handrests, NOMIC, QUARK and ERGO ice axes adapt perfectly to the terrain and to the build of each climber.

-The new ice tools in detail

QUARK
A combination of ice axe features for technical mountaineering and for ice climbing, the new QUARK is more versatile.
It has an entirely modular structure, adaptable to the type of activity. It has reduced weight and an optimal swing. From couloirs to extreme gullies and icefalls,
the QUARK allows you to push the limits.
ADZE and HAMMER versions available.

NOMIC
Designed for ice climbing and dry tooling, the new NOMIC's ergonomic handle and adjustable GRIPREST guarantee superior comfort. The lower part of the GRIPREST is equipped with a toothed blade to ensure the bite required for hard snow. The modular head allows a hammer to be added when placing pitons.

ERGO
The ERGO is a high-end dry tooling and ice climbing axe. Its serious curves speak to its serious ambitions. This ice axe is extremely efficient, whether on overhanging rock or on a crystal ice stalactite.

-New and improved features

-Modular head

The modular design allows each ice axe to be adapted to the type of activity or terrain:
- with the pick weights: the balance of the ice axe during the strike is improved for specific placements in hard ice
- without the pick weights: the ice axe is much lighter
- with the hammer or the adze: the ice axe allows the user to plant pitons or to clean the ice
All combinations are possible with the interchangeable ICE or DRY picks.

-The QUARK's modular handle

The TRIGREST (on the upper part) offers multiple combinations to improve grip when holding the axe or switching hands. Tool-free position adjustment using the trigger.

The GRIPREST (on the lower part) is a hand rest for leashless climbing. Once in position, it does not obstruct the carabiner hole of the ice axe. It may be removed to enhance plunging the shaft into snow when the ice axe is used in piolet-canne technique.

-New GRIPREST for NOMIC and ERGO

The GRIPREST hand rest on the NOMIC and ERGO has a blade that is toothed on the lower side to improve hold during piolet-canne usage, for example when topping out of a climb or moving over snow passages.
The handle of the new NOMIC ice axe and its GRIPREST have been considerably modified for larger hands and for improved stability. The GRIPREST position adjusts to S, M and L.

-The ERGO shaft

The strong curvature of the ERGO shaft provides substantial clearance under the head, and also creates an angle for the handle that favors power and comfort when the climber is suspended for extended periods.

Tools & Cards

Your video has definately made up my mind about the Quarks. I'm buying them tomorrow. They are perfectly balanced, simple to modify and look uber sexy.
Thanks for the video.
I too am interested in the Playing Cards. Are their any plans to sell them in the UK? I live in the South of England and the Lake District and would like to know of any stockists nearby.

Thankyou Petzl
I look forward to having a play with my Quarks

Quark

Hi,

I`m very interested in the quark-tool for next season. But I`d like to know if the TRIGREST is working (free adjustment) when I use you griptape on the Quark.
And where do I find the MASSELOTTES extraweights.

Thanks

Nils

I like your tools very much

Answer Quark

Hello Nils,

If you add Griptape on the shaft of the Quark, the TRIGREST will not be able to slide freely up and down the shaft. It is possible for you to order Masselottes by contacting the Petzl distributor in your country.

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely

Unsrewing the screws on the Modular Head of Quark

Hi, I am trying to take off the hammer from my axe, but when I try to unscrew the nuts at the head, they are super tight. I tried not to force it. are the screws threaded the conventional right-handed way, or left-handed?

Thanks

RE: Unscrewing...

Hello Bang,

Yes the screws are threaded the conventional way, to loosen them use a WD40 type lubricant and add an extension tube to your wrench. If you still can't unscrew them contact our aftersales service in your contry.

trigrest

i have the chalet moser quarks , is it possible to fit the trigest on it. or is it another piece of equipement i can use to do a finger grip.

Answer

Hello Mat, sorry for the late answer but the answer is pretty complicated related to the version of tools that you may have. But this is what we can say :

For old QUARK (U19P et U19M), old nomic (U21), QUARK ERGO (U20) and AZTAR, it is possible to place a TRIGREST (U15 AAC) But it will be very hard to slide up and down on the bigger shaft.
For old QUARK (U19P et U19M), old nomic (U21), QUARK ERGO (U20) and AZTAR, it is possible to place a TRIGREST (U15 TRI) but it will not slide at all, it can stay in a fixed position without the orange lever.

For old QUARK (U19P et U19M), ancien nomic (U21), QUARK ERGO (U20) et AZTAR, it is possible to place a TRIGREST (U19 TRI) but it will not slide at all, it can stay in a fixed position without the black lever.
For New QUARK (U19 M2 et U19 P2) , new NOMIC (U21 2 et U21 3) et ERGO (U22 et U22 2) it is possible to place and to slide U19 TRI and U15 AAC, U15 TRI will be very difficult to slide.

Hope this will help

Sincerely

Trigrest on nomics & Card Deck

Hey guys, great tools! Got a pair of Nomics and I just love them!
I also love the three possible option for grip that you created on the Ergos, and I would really like to replicate it on my Nomics - is the Trigrest compatible with the Nomics? Can I easily set it up on them just like it is set-up on the Ergos (removing the "movable finger-hook" and placing it on the tape?

Also - where can I get a deck of those amazing cards here in Vancouver, Canada?

Thanks!

Answer

Hello Dubnorix,

Here is what we can say about fitting Trigrest :

For old QUARK (U19P et U19M), old nomic (U21), QUARK ERGO (U20) and AZTAR, it is possible to place a TRIGREST (U15 AAC) But it will be very hard to slide up and down on the bigger shaft.

Hope this will help.

Any chance of scoring a set

Any chance of scoring a set of cards in the US?

Aztars and the Griprest

Is there enough metal in the spike of Aztar axes (about 10 years old) to add the new Quark griprest? The Quark seems to have a little more metal forward of the gear hole than the Aztar. I would like to be sure before I buy some and start carving on the grip.

Also how do I order some? I've seen then in stores (they usually only have one on hand) but I don't see them as a seperate item in your on-line cataloge.

I love my Aztars, but am doing more lead climbing, and the griprest would make them more secure when climbing leashless.

Thanks.

RE Aztars and the Griprest

Hello,

Your question has been forwarded to our aftersales service. Stay tuned for an answer.

Quark griprest

HI,
I own a couple of Charlet-Moser Quark since 2002. I would add the griprest. Does the griprest of new Quark fits with the old quarks? Or can it be adapted?
Thanks for an answer.
J

RE: Quark griprest

Dear Jac,

Yes, GRIPREST sold with the new QUARK fit with old ice axes, no problem.

Sincerely
