Saturday, March 3rd : French ultra-runner Sébastien Chaigneau won the 123 km, 5500m vertical gain race on Gran Canaria Island (Spain), establishing a new 12h54mn course record. Brazilian Fernanda Maciel led the women’s category finishing in 15h02mn.

The first ultra of the season, The North Face TransGranCanaria, is a good warm up for runners who compete all year long on the ultra-marathon circuit. This race, which covers 123km and 5500m vertical gain, runs from north to south across the largest island of the archipelago.

Although it was already proposed last year the start was not given due to severe weather on the mountains and no one was able to complete the route. In 2009 the first edition of this race was on another trail.

Strong winds, storming, rain, snow and heavy fog wreaked havoc on the "The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc", which was held August 27 - 29.

This mythical race follows the famous hiking path that goes round the Mont-Blanc, called “Tour du Mont-Blanc”. With 166 km and 9400 meters in difference of altitude, the race will include running at night once or twice.
