Concerns all GRIGRI 2’s (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B ) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136.

Background

GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the position

Petzl has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2 can cause internal damage, such that the GRIGRI 2 handle may become stuck in the open position.

When the handle is stuck in this position, the assisted braking function is disabled. A damaged GRIGRI 2 in this configuration will function similarly to a manual belay device (e.g. tube style device).

When using a damaged GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the position as shown in Figure 1, failure to control the braking side of the rope will increase the risk of an uncontrolled descent. A GRIGRI 2 with a damaged handle must be immediately retired from service.

It is important to note that failure to control the braking side of the rope is a misuse of the GRIGRI 2 under any circumstance (See GRIGRI 2 Technical Notice - pdf file, 2.5Mb).


As of June 20, 2011, seven damaged products have been returned to Petzl through our worldwide distribution network. Petzl has no knowledge of any accidents resulting from a damaged GRIGRI 2 handle.

 

Petzl Response

Because the safety of our users is our primary concern, as a precautionary measure, Petzl has decided to take the following actions:

  • increase the mechanical strength of the handle on all GRIGRI 2’s from serial number 11137 onward.
  • recall all GRIGRI 2’s with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, and replace them with a new, strengthened GRIGRI 2.

Petzl will pay for all shipping costs to complete this replacement.

GRIGRI2 recall serial number. If you have a GRIGRI 2 (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, please contact your local Petzl distributor by email (see below) with your complete postal address in order to initiate an exchange.

The previous generation GRIGRI is not concerned by this recall.

  • How can I tell the difference between a GRIGRI and a GRIGRI 2?
    The GRIGRI 2 has been available on the market since January 2011.
    If you purchased your device before 1st January 2011, then it isn't a GRIGRI 2 and thus is not affected by this recall for exchange.
    If you purchased your device after the 1st of January 2011, then compare it with the images published in our announcements for this recall for exchange.
     
  • How can I tell if a GRIGRI 2 is included in this recall for exchange?
    GRIGRI 2s with serial numbers from 10326 to 11136 are included in this exchange.
     
  • Where do I find the serial number of the GRIGRI 2?
    The serial number is laser engraved on the body of the product, underneath and protected by the folded handle.
     
  • What should I do with my GRIGRI 2 when it is included in the recall for exchange?
    Contact your national distributor by email, providing your postal address in order to begin the exchange process.
     
  • How can I tell the difference between a GRIGRI 2 with a reinforced handle and a GRIGRI 2 concerned by the recall for exchange?
    A GRIGRI 2 with a reinforced handle is only recognisable by a serial number after 11136.
     
  • How do I know whether a new GRIGRI 2 for sale in a shop has the reinforced handle?
    The first five numbers of the serial number are higher than 11136.
    To help our retailers in replacing their stocks, we have temporarily added a green sticker to the product.
     
  • Will I receive the same colour GRIGRI 2?

  • What is the warranty of a Petzl product?
    A Petzl product is covered by a 3-year warranty against all material or manufacturing defect. Exclusions: normal wear and tear, oxidation, modifications or alterations, incorrect storage, poor maintenance, negligence, uses for which this product is not designed.
     
  • What is the lifetime of a Petzl product?
    For Petzl's plastic and textile products, the maximum lifetime is 10 years from the date of manufacture. It is indefinite for metallic products.

    - ATTENTION: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after only one use, depending on the type and intensity of usage and the environment of usage (harsh environments, marine environment, sharp edges, extreme temperatures, chemical products, etc.).
    - A product must be retired when:
    It is over 10 years old and made of plastic or textiles.
    It has been subjected to a major fall (or load).
    It fails to pass inspection.
    You have any doubt as to its reliability.
    You do not know its full usage history.
    When it becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards, technique or incompatibility with other equipment, etc.

    Destroy retired equipment to prevent further use.

Good work on admitting a fault and sorting it but i would never have known if i hadnt been told by a friend !!!!!

i bought my grigri 2 because my grigri got stolen/lost and i use it alot as im always adapting and updating my local wall as well as tightening the loose bolts , this is a job i do solo and i just find it frustrating and also an inconvenience that i cant just exchange it at my local shop and that i only bought it 4 days ago !!!!!!

I ordered a grigri2 in March, days after my local climbing gym received their first batch. I did not receive my grigri2 until the end of May, but now I have to send it out for a replacement. At this point I would prefer a refund, and I'll just keep using my ATC.

I have seen a number of occasions when a grigri2 has locked the rope in between the camming part of the body and the handle so that the rope becomes trapped and is unable to be released until the load/weight of the climber is off the unit and then the cam can be opened fully to release the rope. There was a comment on this on a Spanish website and also on a uk web forum. Has this been resolved or is this still under investigation?

The recall in process concerns the correction of the strength of the handle. Nothing else has been changed on the product.
Petzl has identified, extensively tested, and communicated on the occasional possibility of jamming the rope behind the cam, This inconvenient is not a security problem - it does not affect braking. We conducted many tests in-house (fall factor of 2, 80 kg): even with ropes of small diameters (8.9 and 9.1 mm), the fall is arrested and there is no alteration of the rope, either to the sheath or the core. If jamming occurs, a simple release is described on our website. link

Very pleased with the process

Team Petzl,
you may be getting a lot of flak right now from other climbers out there but I have to say that I just got off the phone with your representatives and you have made this process so easy from the consumers to get their replacement GRIGRI2. This comes from a man with 19 years in customer service to our great military so if there is one thing I know... it's keeping the customer happy ... and alive. Effective recall

Just goes to show that if you buy anything with a serial number then get your details recorded, I did.
I bought my Grigri 2 just last week and this Sunday I was going to use it for the first time. Yesterday however I got a letter about the recall and I will hopefully be exchanging it tomorrow.

I bought the affected model of Grigri2 online at bananafingers.com and I live in Malaysia.

I contacted Petzl America as per advised.

You then asked me to contact my nearest distributor in Singapore. I spoke to them and they have refused to exchange the Grigri2 for me citing the fact that I did not purchase it from them and their priority is for exchange for customers who did purchase it from them.

I am royally annoyed about this and I would like a replacement at no cost to me and as soon as possible.

I have recently purchased three GriGri 2 from Bouldering.com and unfortunately all three devices have fallen under the recall. What is more troubling is that 2 of the devices are in Singapore right now and I am holding the other device here in Australia, how do I proceed to exchange the device? Excessive groove

I just went through the process of initiating a replacement of my recalled grigri2, but I also wanted to make it known that I've noticed an excessive groove that is rapidly forming on the brake hand side where the rope exits the device. Since purchasing the device, I've used it around a dozen days worth of sport climbing in the eastern sierra. I hope that Petzl uses this challenging time as an opportunity to address this matter as well.

Just goes to show that if you buy anything with a serial number then get your details recorded, I did.
I bought my Grigri 2 just last week and this Sunday I was going to use it for the first time. Yesterday however I got a letter about the recall and I will hopefully be exchanging it tomorrow.

If you possess a GRIGRI 2 (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136 thanks to contact by email your local Petzl distributor (see below) with your complete postal address in order to initiate an exchange.

I should get something extra special because it's the first one in the series. Perhaps a whole new rack, all expences paid tour of the PETZL factorie and 18 months climber around the world road trip and a free T-shirt.

Grigri 2 Replacement

Good day, I live in the Philippines and i just received my new GriGri 2 from the USA 2 weeks ago. the Grigri was bought by my father at Amazon.com, I haven't used it since i received it here in the Philippines..

Please advise me where i can get a replacement near the Philippines since we have no Official Petzl Distributor here. And until when will be the exchange of the product?

Hello Khit,

In the first place make sure that your grigri 2 is concerned by the recall, for this check the serial number, the concerned units have the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136. If your serial is outside this range your product has allready been modified. Also look for a small green sticker.
If your Grigri 2 is concerned by the recall for replacement, notify us here and we will find an efficient solution for a quick replacement without any charge.

i buy grigri 2 and i have problems with this, iti veri hard to relese the rope from him, i get stack several times, but my luck was i work with 2 grigri i need to switch grigri2 with grigri to get down of any building, becouse i get stuck.!!!!

From what we understand it seems that you use the Grigri 2 for rope access ? This product is maybe not the best choice for this type of activity, specially if you are using stiff and used ropes. Please get in contact with our distributor in your country to discuss of your problem.
