Following a via ferrata accident on Thursday the 5th of May 2011 we launched - by reason of precaution - a voluntary product safety alert to inspect our SCORPIO via ferrata lanyards (L60 and L60CK) manufactured prior to March 2005. This alert was launched on 13th May.

Our internal investigation and analysis of our manufacturing procedures specific to the production of tear webbing energy absorbers has identified a weakness which could explain the defect leading to the cause of this accident.

As a consequence and even though the probability of this defect recurring remains very low, we have decided to take the following actions:

  1. Temporary stoppage of all Petzl tear webbing lanyard production.
  2. Temporary stoppage of the sale of all stock of SCORPIO and ABSORBICA tear webbing lanyards for inspection before resuming sales.
  3. Extension of the product safety alert of 13.05.11 to include all Petzl SCORPIO energy absorbing lanyards sold up to 19th May 2011 (up to serial number 11137****).

You'll find in the Pro section a dedicated page regarding ABSORBICA actions.

If you possess a SCORPIO via ferrata lanyard as detailed above we ask you to:

The via ferrata lanyards ZYPER and ZYPER VERTIGO are not concerned by this alert for inspection.
You may continue to use these products, whilst respecting the conditions of use, maintenance and inspection outlined in their respective technical notices.

Canadian Distributor

Pleas advise, what actions to take if you live in Canada. The Distributor appears to be Petzl America when you choose Canada in the Distributor list. I WILL NOT PAY SHIPPING to USA.

Also: How long will the inspection take? I use and need my Scorpio almost every week and will NOT be able to give it away for several weeks or months. In this case I expect a free of charge equal quality rental device!

About L56 ZYPER-Y

I choose L56 ZYPER-Y. I don't like the feeling and the result of the webbing tear effect.
According to the "Carabiner Experience brochure", can I use the "GO Oval maillon"
to replace the use of the lark's head hitch to attach the ZYPER-Y on the harness?

I appreciate the quick response from Petzl to this SCORPIO safety issue,
it's the reason that I will continue to support Petzl product.

Answer About L56 Zyper-Y

Hello Chiu,

Thank you for your message, your question has been forwarded to our technical information service and we should have soon an answer for you.
Sincerely

Anwer to your question from technical dpt.

Hello Chiu,

Yes it is possible to use a P18 link (http://www.petzl.com/en/pro/verticality/connectors/steel-carabiners-conn...) to connect a via ferrata lanyard to the harness (as shown in PE carabiner). It is important to close the P18 tightly using a wrench ant to check that using this solution will not create any problems. Petzl recommends to use a larks head to link the lanyard to the attachment points of the harness. Please check the instructions for use of the lanyard :
http://www.petzl.com/files/all/technical-notice/Sport/L60-SCORPIO.pdf

Thank you for your interest

Thank you very much for the

Thank you very much for the advice. I have tried the method of using P18 Demi Rond and the result condition is very good! (Really secure! I am using the Navaho Sit with Top Croll, the sternal attachment point.)
Just one more question, is it possible to use the M37SL Omni Screw-lock instead of the P18?

Answer

Hello Chiu,

Please accept our apologies for a late answer, we have had serious issues with our back office to answer comments. It is now working correctly again.

The answer to your question is no, we do not recommend the use of M37SL Ommi Screw-lock instead of the P18.

Thanks to the UK distributor

Thanks to the UK distributor Lyon for their very swift response to this matter. All our 22 Scorpio lanyards were inspected and returned causing no loss to our business.

Norwegian disributor

When I follow the link above is says trygve alm is the norwegian distributor, but under the GriGri2 another firm is listed: VARRI AS post@varri.no 0047 2271 9200
Which is correct?

Filling in the form at http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/contact_country linked above I have not received any answer.

Answer Norvegian Distributor

Hello Torbjorn,

In Norway we have one distributor for vertical products : Varri and one for headlamps : Trigve Alm, for the inspection of Scorpio or the exchange of the Grigri2 please refer to Varri.

While the potential risk of an incident is very small, our total commitment to the safety of our users has led us to make this decision. With the summer climbing season just beginning, Petzl understands that this recall comes at an inconvenient time and we are working hard to ensure that everyone receives their replacement GRIGRI2 as quickly as possible. Everyone at Petzl is committed to resolving this issue, we ask you to accept our apologies for this inconvenience. Thank you for your continued support.

I received back my lanyards from the local dealer at Croatia and have found inside absorber pocket green stickers but without "conforme" word on them.
Please advise if this is o.k. and that I'm free to use them..?
Thanks in advance & best regards

answer

Hello Branko,
If there is a green sticker inside your lanyards have been checked and are ok to use, in the beginning of the recall for inspections the green labels were unmarked. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely
