VIDEO - Caving in the Gouffre Berger

Team Petzl retraces the steps of the first explorers (Joe Berger, Fernand Petzl, Jean Lavigne, Georges Garby, Pierre Chevalier...). Thanks to extraordinary images from the film “Siphon-1122” (directed by Georges Marry in 1962 and produced by Jack Lesage) relive the intensity of the first descent in this now well-known, must see cave.

Ice Climbing Season 2012: program, tips and information

As winter is finally settling in Europe and other parts of the northern hemisphere, the first icicles start to appear, and the call of ice climbing can be heard. If the cold weather stays, it should not be long before the waterfalls turn solid and the first ice climbers show up. Numerous events are organized around the world and these are valuable occasions to test equipment, train, learn techniques, share information and meet with other ice climbers. Ice climbing is a serious endeavor and requires all the skills and precautions of mountaineering.

Emily Harrington on RocTrip China

We are all back home now after the Petzl Roc Trip in the Getu Valley. There’s a lot to say about our experiences there. Almost too many overwhelming thoughts, memories, and emotions come to mind simultaneously, and it's proving difficult to form it all into a cohesive story. One thing’s for sure, however: we went on an adventure I doubt any of us will forget.

Petzl RocTrip China : Where there's a will (and strong arms), there's a way

In the early hours of Sunday, October 30, one of the greatest Petzl RocTrips ever came to an end. Here in the Getu valley, the last few days have witnessed the very best of rock climbing, community sharing and entertainment. Yesterday at the great Arch, above the eyes of hundreds of spectators, Dani "La Machina" Andrada sent all the pitches of his huge project, "Corazon de Ensueno". To complete this feat he was belayed all the way by Chris Sharma.

Petzl Rock Trip 2011. Getu valley. There must be more limestone here than the whole of the UK put together! But the really crazy thing is the variation in styles. There just seems to be everything plus more other styles you didn’t know existed. The world of slopers was totally crazy, but pretty close to on-sight hell, certainly for me anyway. And also not red-point heaven either requiring large biceps and shoulders that God forgot to give me.

Bits of rock can look pretty much the same, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world. Big features, crazy formations, caves, pinnacles, whatever; up close and pulling hard, rock is rock. In a place like China you need to escape the system and explore the view, just to know where you are, or you might as well have stayed home!
