ohhh metteo!

 About one year after visiting Mexico I was back again. This time because of the Petzl Roctrip festival held at the crags of El Chonta (near the city of Taxco) and Jilotepec. The agenda was climbing, sightseeing and party as always. It was really great to see the old team+some new faces and all the hyper psyched mexican climbers that had attended.

Petzl RocTrip Mexico 2010 - Las Chicas Superpoderosas!

 On Saturday, November 7, Petzl athletes again made their mark on the Mexican climbing scene, adding a second 5.14 first ascent to the amazing El Huevo crag at Jilotepec. The latest hard project to fall to the visiting troupe of international rock stars is called Las Chicas Superpoderosas (“Super Powerpuff Girls” in Spanish), and it weighs in at roughly 5.14c, or 8c+.

A Fine Wine

  As a fine wine gains in taste and quality, so do the Petzl
Rock Trips! There have been some pretty good ones; Red River,
Squarmish and my favourite so far in Kalymnos; all fantastic and each a trip of
a life-time, but this year Petzl really extended themselves with a

 Friday, November 5. The sport action at Petzl RocTrop 2010 is heating up just as the trip nears its end. The Petzl team and hundreds of RocTrip participants from around the world have been throwing themselves at the conglomerate routes of Jilotepec, and with only a few short days here, the team has managed to dispatch multiple routes in the 5.13/5.14 range, including a first ascent of what may be Mexico’s hardest climb, a 5.14c called Cruz Diablo.

Petzl RocTrip Mexico 2010 - Dia de los Muertos in Jilotepec

 After spending two days climbing in the gigantic stalactite-filled El Chonta cave, the Petzl team took a rest day. They headed to downtown Taxco, navigating narrow, steep, and winding cobblestone roads in vans and busses. Starting at Taxco’s famous Santa Priscilla cathedral, with ornate stone and wood carvings, they toured the streets, full of vintage Volkswagen Beetles. The colonial town, a series of box-like buildings stacked on the the side of a valley and watched over by a stone statue of Jesus, is famous for its silver trade, attracting tourist from around the world.
